For 25 years, Atlas Logistic Network has been at the forefront of global logistics, connecting freight forwarders around the world into a tight-knit community built on trust and collaboration. What sets Atlas apart is not just its industry expertise but its roots as a family business.
The origins of Atlas trace back to 1998, when Luc Huysmans and three like-minded co-founders launched the network. Over the years, as new companies joined and others departed, the network evolved and, in recent years, became fully owned by the Huysmans family. Ten years ago, Lyanne Huysmans joined the company, marking the beginning of a new chapter—both in leadership continuity and with the launch of the Alfa Logistics Family initiative. With the 25th anniversary conference marking a monumental milestone, this family duo reflects on their shared vision, values, and the journey that has brought them here.
The Seeds of an Idea
When Luc Huysmans founded Atlas Logistic Network, the logistics world was vastly different. The need for a platform that fostered connections between freight forwarders was clear, but no one had yet taken the leap. Inspired by insights from colleagues across the globe, Luc turned a vision into reality.
“My first step into logistics was as a manifest clerk at a shipping company,” Luc recalls, reflecting on his early career. Years later, he founded Atlas. “We noticed the growing demand for a reliable system where agents could learn about each other and build partnerships. Alongside friends in logistics from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and the UAE, we saw the gap in the market.”
With this collective ambition, Atlas Logistic Network was born. What began as a modest network is now a flourishing global community. Today, Atlas is more than a business—it’s a legacy.
A Family Affair
Atlas grew not just as a network but also as a family-led enterprise. Lyanne Huysmans, who began her career in the quality and accreditation department of a hospital, reflects on her seamless yet challenging transition into logistics.
“My first role in logistics actually began here, at Atlas,” Lyanne explains. “When someone left the team, my father saw it as the perfect opportunity to bring me on board. Balancing family and work was certainly not without its hurdles, but the shared goal of building something greater fueled our ambition.”
Lyanne now carries the torch as managing director, embodying the values ingrained by her father. For her, Atlas is not just about operations and strategy; it’s about people.
“As a family, we’ve always focused on qualities like solidarity, persistence, and communication,” she shares. “Those are the principles I strive to pass on to our team and members. At Atlas, everyone is treated like family.”
Luc echoes those sentiments. “You’re not just building a business,” he says. “You’re building a community. Passion for your work, combined with offering opportunities and assisting others, is how we create value. Those are messages I’ve always tried to impress upon Lyanne.”
Navigating Challenges Together
Running a family business comes with its own set of challenges. For the Huysmans duo, creating boundaries between family life and work is an ongoing effort.
“To be honest, there’s no clear line,” Lyanne admits with a laugh. “Ideas come to me at night, in the early mornings… it’s a 24/7 job because of the passion that drives us.”
Luc adds, “You need to be deliberate about creating space to pause and recalibrate. Even amidst passion, it’s important to plan moments of reflection to ensure longevity.”
Despite the challenges, the family dynamic has had its distinct advantages. “Having built the foundation together means we understand each other’s goals,” says Lyanne. “Even our debates come from a place of trust and shared ambition.”
25 Years of Connection and Progress
This year, the Huysmans family celebrates a milestone that reflects their commitment to innovation and quality—the 25th Atlas Conference. Luc and Lyanne see the conference as the culmination of their efforts to foster a sense of global connection.
“When we started, our very first conference in 1998 was a modest affair, bringing together maybe 30 to 40 companies,” Luc reminisces. “Today, we’re uniting members from all corners of the world.”
These conferences are the heart of Atlas. Beyond logistics and strategy, they spark collaboration, inspiration, and personal connections.
“We want every attendee to experience something memorable,” Lyanne says. “We invest in making everyone feel valued, so they leave with more than just business cards—they leave with relationships.”
Carrying Forward the Family Spirit
What truly makes Atlas unique is its commitment to maintaining a family-oriented ethos even as it scales. Members are not treated as mere colleagues but as integral parts of the network’s broader family.
“Family businesses are built on values, not just profit,” Lyanne explains. “For us, those values include quality, appreciation, and the belief that everyone’s contribution matters.”
Luc emphasizes that the strength of Atlas lies in how it balances tradition with adaptability. “Even as technology and regulations evolve, staying true to our core values ensures continuity. It’s about innovation, yes, but also about holding onto what makes us special.”
Looking ahead, Lyanne is optimistic about the future. “The guiding principles my father established—trust, perseverance, and a sense of community—will continue to serve Atlas well. It’s my privilege to carry that forward as the second generation.”
Celebrating a Shared Legacy
The 25th Atlas Conference is not just a celebration of the network’s success but a tribute to the Huysmans family’s remarkable story. Built on shared vision and values, the Atlas Logistic Network demonstrates what can be achieved when professionalism is combined with the warmth and commitment of a family business.
Our family spirit is reflected throughout our network, as many Atlas members are themselves family-run logistics companies. Today, we see numerous fellow members undergoing their own generational transitions, with the next generation stepping into leadership roles and continuing the legacy within their organizations.
“Atlas has always been more than a business,” Lyanne concludes. “It’s a family—one that extends across the globe. That’s a legacy I’m determined to uphold.”
As freight forwarders join together for the milestone conference, the Huysmans family’s vision for Atlas as a community-driven, innovative force in logistics is clearer than ever. Here’s to the next 25 years of connection, trust, and shared growth.
